Some of the volunteers have put in over 15 years of service, all volunteer. This event is designed to bring together all the people that help make the station what it is together for a celebration each year.
Sovereign was one of the stations first volunteer programmers, hosting Art of the Musical Theatre, a show dedicated to the music used in theatre productions, for 15 years.
His wife, Suzanne Sovereign was on hand to accept a plaque commemorating the renaming of the award.
"I was very thrilled and I know that Dave would be very honoured," she said.
Sovereign was the driving force behind the establishment of the first radio station as well as station in Haliburton, where he lived, as well as station manager.
This was the 12th year that CJLX has held the awards dinner to acknowledge its volunteer programmers, most of who come from the community but some of which are radio broadcasting students who have taken it upon themselves to go above and beyond their responsibilities at the station to create shows that help fill out the stations varied and diverse program schedule.
The specialty programming is varied and the shows showcase anything from jazz, big band, classical, and reggae music to Canadian comedy, public affairs and a sports show dedicated to Loyalist Lancer game coverage.
Josh Kendell and David Foot, hosts of the live broadcast of play by play of Lancers games, were honoured for the extra time they put into the programming of game coverage. Both have finished their final year of the broadcast journalism program offered at Loyalist College, and both will also be returning next year to take part in the newly formed sports journalism post-diploma program being offered for the first in September.
Foot said he is proud, and that it makes him feel like he has done something for the community instead of just doing for himself. It originally started off as a way to put together demos and to get experience said Foot.
"It's somewhat of an honour to be recognized for doing something that I love to do," he said.
Foot said he hopes he and Kendell will be allowed to continue to host the show next year, but there has been some talk about incorporated into the sports journalism course with students taking turns at hosting the play-by-play.
Camille Parent, radio broadcast student and program director, received a certificate of appreciation for his work on the Loyalist College Radio Inc. Board of Directors. Students on the board are voted on by their peers.
"I was elected the president on the board, which gives me the duty of coordinating the meeting process, and carrying through the agenda," said Parent.
All positions are volunteer and are awarded a certificate of appreciation at the annual Appreciation Dinner & Award Ceremony.
"It gives me great pleasure to not only receive appreciation for my work, but to actually be part of the success of the station," he said. "This is my last week in the station before I head off on internship."
The evening included a gourmet dinner prepared by the chef's training and culinary management students at Loyalist and service was provided by the hospitality program.
