OPP will be doubling their efforts to focus on safe boating and driving this weekend. They will especially be looking for aggressive driving, drinking and driving, and people not using seatbelts, restraints or flotation devises properly. They say 16 people died on Ontario's highways, trails and waterways on the Canada Day weekend, and they want to reduce that number this long weekend.

Outgoing O-P-P Commissioner Julian Fantino says it's a ``great honour and privilege'' to have headed up the provincial police force. In an open letter, Fantino calls his time at the helm of the provincial police the highlight of his more than 40 years in public service. Fantino, who became commissioner in October of 2006, will be replaced next month by deputy commissioner Chris Lewis. Lewis oversaw the creation of the aboriginal policing bureau and was responsible for the force's planning, preparation and response to the aboriginal national day of action for three years straight.

All area beaches have been listed as safe to swim in for the long weekend. There are no e-coli warnings. The e-coli warning for Trent River in Frankford Park and Stoco Lake in Tweed Park last week have been lifted and they are safe.

The province's acting Chief Coroner will be reviewing all drowning deaths in Ontario for the months of May, June, July and August this year. Dr. Bert Lauwers is trying to find common strands between the dozens of drownings this summer. He says results of the review will be released later this year. In the meantime, Lauwers recommends all Ontario residents should learn to swim -- something he calls a basic life skill.
