College receives award for fundraising efforts
By Jessica Stoneburgh
Loyalist College has received an award for its contributions to the United Way of Quinte raising $15,175 in total, including employee contributions.
At the Empire Theatre, on Jan. 21, Loyalist received the United Way Spirit Award for Employee Workplace Campaign, for organizations of more than 250 employees.
Students in the post-graduate public relations program have organized several different campaigns to help raise money for United Way.
In October, the PR students at Loyalist launched the campaign with “Casino Loyale” and followed, soon after, with several other events, such as the cookie and coffee donated by Chartwells for $2, the pancake breakfast supported by the Quinte Sunrise Rotary and the book sale organized by the college bookstore. The police foundations program organized a Run for United Way.
The Spirit Awards are given to organizations, campaigns, teams and individuals who achieve outstanding results in their United Way campaigns.
“Doing the work and getting recognized in the community is great. It means they see the work that we have done and they know we are getting results,” said Chris Robinson, a PR student.
“This award was received because of the total effort of everyone, staff, students and the community working together,” said Fran Nobes, the United Way College campaign co-ordinator.
“As a group, we are very proud to be named the winners of the United Way Spirit Award. It is wonderful but we want to keep in mind that everything we did is going to help those in the community,” said Nobes.
“Loyalist College is pleased to support our community United Way campaign,” said Loyalist College President Maureen Piercy in a press release. “I want to thank the many individuals who help in this year’s success: the students, alumni, faculty and staff and our partners in the cafeteria and the bookstore, for their efforts. I would especially like to thank the Student Government, the Alumni Association, and students in Professor Kerry Ramsay’s Public Relations class for “ Casino Loyale”, and in Professor Larry Cook’s class for their Police Run, organized in support of the United Way.”
